Thrilling Bank Deposit Market Share

Analyzing deposit market share is an adventure in bankerland. Some of those senior guys actually get paid for this. The thrill is in the minutiae. In this case in La Jolla, deposits grew more than 2.5 times from mid-1996 to June 30, 2006, better than the 2.05 growth rate of deposits countywide. From mid-2005 to June 30, 2006, the latest available figures, deposits slightly shrank to $3.15 billion in La Jolla, while deposits grew better than 1 percent countywide. La Jolla Bank grew deposits by $3.8 million to $280 million in La Jolla alone, and improved its share from 8.71 to 8.88 percent of the La Jolla market. But it was bumped out of third place by World Savings. Young Regents Bank enjoys stronger market share than the established First National Bank. Vince Siciliano, CEO of 1st Pacific Bank headquartered in 92037, says he shows no deposits in La Jolla because his nearest deposit-holding branch is nearly next door in 92122 where it maintains about $90 million in deposits. That would give him about 3 percent market share if in 92037. Thrilled yet?
