Where’s The Money, From
Carlsbad To San Ysdiro?

So, who’s got more money, bankers in Del Mar or San Ysidro. If you answered the obvious, Del Mar, you’d be correct in 2006, but not in 2005. Last year, Del Martians stashed $831.6 million in local banks, edging out San Ysidrans’ $828.6 million. But the year before, San Ysidrans led with $769.5 million in deposits to Del Martians’ $676.6 million.

A scruffy village at San Diego’s port of entry from Tijuana, San Ysidro grew more in the last decade to reach its status near Del Mar. San Ysdiro deposits totaled $176.8 million 1996, when Del Mar banks held $337.2 million in deposits.

How much money sits in FDIC-insured banks in other San Diego communities?

Point Loma’s 92106 Zip Code held $700.7 million in deposits last year, $700.8 million in 2005 and $405.3 million in 1996. Point Loma’s neighboring 92107 Zip Code hosted $213.6 million last year and $151.3 million 10 years earlier.

Escondido’s 92025 Zip Code held $2.51 billion of deposits last year and $1.14 billion 10 years earlier.

Carlsbad’s 92008 held $1.23 billion in ’06 and $1.02 billion in ’05.

Alpine’s 91901, which hosted only Great Western Bank in 1996, before the Viejas Casino was built, held $22.9 million in deposits 10 years ago. Last year, Viejas-owned Borrego Springs Bank held more than that alone, $26 million out of $234.1 million in total deposits. California Bank & Trust and Washington Mutual now hold greater market shares in Alpine.

La Mesa’s 91942 Zip Code hosted $1.13 billion in deposits last year, up from $1.08 billion in ’05. La Mesa’s 91941 Zip Code held $439.6 million in deposits last year, down from $497.1 million the year before.

Mission Hills and Hillcrest’s 92103 held $758.1 million in deposits last year, way up from $373.6 million in 1996.

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach’s 92109 hosted $785.4 million in deposits in ’06 and $516 million in 1996, one of the slowest growth rates in the county.

Mission Valley’s 92108’s growth was even slower, however, from $525.4 million in ’96 to $785.4 million last year.

Sorrento Mesa and Sorrento Valley’s 92121, where much of San Diego’s high-tech and biotech businesses are growing, enjoyed $661.7 million in deposits in 2006, up from $119.7 million in ’96.

If the Sorrentos keep it up, they might catch San Ysidro.
