The last thing most borrowers expect when they walk into a bank is a stand-up comedy routine, and they probably won’t get one at Point Loma Community Bank, where Tony Calabrese is president.
That’s because Calabrese saves his comedic musings for serving as master of ceremonies for charity and civic events around town, and on his blog, fuggettaboutit.blogspot.com.
Calabrese says his humor springs from everyday situations and observations, such as the time he saw an itinerant man unplug a water machine outside a convenience store so he could charge up a cell phone.
Calabrese also doesn’t understand the iPod craze. “It holds 20,000 songs? Who knows 20,000 songs? There are only three songs you need to know: ‘New York, New York,’ ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.’”
Although he says banking and comedy generally don’t mix, he remembers Lucille Ball got laughs working in a bank. “It was the third version of ‘The Lucy Show,’” he recalls. “She worked for Mr. Mooney.”
