‘Rancho To Ranch House’ Is All About
Preservation, From Adobes To Victorians

Save Our Heritage Organisation is framing 200 years of San Diego architecture during National Preservation Month in one weekend, May 18 to 20. From the 1760s (when Junipero Serra was new in the area) to the 1960s (when Serra Mesa was all new), SOHO’s “Rancho to Ranch House” will encompass Adobe, Victorian, Craftsman, Spanish Revival and Mid-Century architectural styles. The weekend includes architectural tours, workshops, lectures, trade show, antique sales, exhibits, receptions and the 25th annual People in Preservation Awards.

The events are centered at 2600 Laning Road (leeward of the S.S. Recruit, the Navy’s only commissioned nonsailing ship) amid the historic Naval Training Center whose 1942 North Chapel is the backdrop for the Saturday evening preservation awards. SOHO previously held events by architectural style throughout the year — Craftsman and Spanish Revival in the spring and Modernism in the fall. “This event’s whole scope serves the whole county, as SOHO does,” says SOHO executive Alana Coons. With record membership now at 1,400, SOHO is expanding its interests to preserving Rancho Guejito in the North County and even the Tijuana Bullring.

The weekend’s architectural tours include Fort Rosecrans — “We could do Point Loma year after year and never leave the area,” says Coons — National City Victorians, North Park Craftsmans and bungalow courts. Most tours sell out early. For reservations and more information, call (619) 297-9327 or visit sohosandieogo.org.
