UCSD Jacobs School professors Geoff Voelker and Rene Cruz are the newest Jacobs School Ericsson Distinguished Scholars. The honor brings the pair, who also are researchers at UCSD’s California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, $25,000 a year for five years.
Voelker and Cruz have been co-principal investigators on the adaptive systems project, which aims to ensure that wireless systems provide users with nonstop connectivity regardless of where they travel or what wireless standards are being used.
Voelker spent last year working on a wireless measurement platform called Jigsaw, which involves capturing large volumes of data regarding the activity of a large wireless network in order to understand why the networks sometimes shut down or slow down.
Cruz is on a leave of absence from UCSD in order to launch a new San Diego company based on the adaptive systems research called Mushroom Networks Inc.
