Nissan has suffered a dearth of new models in the last year that has affected its position in the marketplace, particularly in crossover SUVs. The Rogue addresses this problem with a medium-size crossover that is designed to compete with the Honda CRV, the Toyota RAV-4 and perhaps the Mazda CX-7.
This vehicle has all the qualifications to be a strong contender in this market. The Rogue is offered in four trims, the $19,102 S two-wheel-drive, the $20,242 S all-wheel drive, the $20,019 SL two-wheel and the $21,135 SL all-wheel drive.
Only one engine is available for all models, a 170 hp, 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder unit that uses the only transmission available, the Nissan Xtronic CVT (constant velocity transmission - no shifts) with manual shift override. It propels the Rogue quite adequately. A “paddle” shift lever underneath the steering wheel or the gearshift can be used for manual shifting. This 4-cylinder engine is probably quieter and gives more “oomph” than the CRV or RAV-4 4-cyl engines. The RAV-4 has the advantage of an optional, very sweet V-6 that really moves the Toyota along. No such option is available on the Rogue.

The low noise level in the cabin is remarkable for an SUV in this price range. Road noise, the bane of most $20,000 and below vehicles, is remarkably well muted and motor noise only intrudes when pushed hard.
The rear seats fold down flat to provide a large cargo capacity and secure and flexible loading is ensured with numerous hold-down features. The seats are very comfortable and long journeys should not be tiring for the driver or front passenger. The powerful climate control system is manually operated. There is no automatic option.
The handling and ride are exceptional, assisted by independent all-around suspension and vehicle stability control, and equipped with electronic brake force distribution with brake assist. The brakes are smooth and powerful. All of this imparts a feeling of confidence when driving this excellent crossover SUV.
Fuel consumption is 22 city/27 highway for the two-wheel-drive configurations and 21 city/26 highway for the four-wheel-drive, however some reviewers claim to have experienced a low average fuel consumption of just over 20 mpg.
Passenger safety is well looked after with standard seat-mounted side airbags and roof-mounted side curtain air bags with rollover sensors.
Standard equipment for the S model includes an alarm system, keyless remote entry, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, tire pressure monitor, tow hooks and traction control. Standard equipment for the SL model includes all of the above plus privacy glass, dual visor vanity mirrors, two power outlets, heated seats, Bluetooth wireless and roof rails.
Optional equipment for the S model is limited to floor mats, wheel guards, etc. Optional equipment for the SL model includes an upgraded stereo system with seven speakers, six-disc CD changer, MP3 player and XM satellite radio, steering wheel-mounted stereo controls and a number of other convenience items for $1,900. A moon roof costs $800, a tow package $450, roof rail cross bars $230 and a spoiler $330.

This appears to be a lot of car for the money and for that reason will be stiff competition for the Honda CRV and the Toyota RAV-4. It is a much better SUV than the cruder, harsh riding, thirsty Nissan Xterra.
Nissan needs to continue introducing new and innovative car and SUV models over the next year to keep up with its Japanese competitors.
