Welcome to the ninth annual 40 Under 40 special edition where San Diego Metropolitan once again recognize our regions exceptional young business and civic leaders.
Since the passing of the Jaycees Outstanding Young Citizens, 40 Under 40 is the only program in San Diego honoring young entrepreneurs, professionals and civic leaders for their excellence primarily in the workplace. Nominated by readers and selected by a panel of distinguished judges independent of the Metropolitan, the honorees are awesome and deserve your encouragement.
Collected in April and May, the nominations once again were stellar. With so many good candidates, youd never know wed already issued 320 honors. That got us thinking about the 10th anniversary next year... But we are getting ahead of ourselves. With another strong field this year, it was left to our judges, who met in mid-June, to make the tough calls.
Our judges are a pretty diverse bunch themselves. The group includes Dennis Guseman, dean of the College of Business Administration at CSU San Marcos; Louise Torio, executive director of Historic San Diego Consulting; retired Navy Capt. Dick Cloward; and Shandon Harbour, president of SDA Security. We thank them for their efforts. (Incidentally, sponsors and advertisers were not approached until well after the honorees were selected.)
As in years past, a portion of the proceeds from the 40 Under 40 Awards program will benefit the YWCA of San Diego County and its social services, including Beckys House for battered women and their children. This is the YWCAs 100th anniversary in San Diego.
Each of the 40 honorees is profiled on the following pages. Meet and celebrate with them on Sept. 25, and learn more about each, during an uplifting noon luncheon program at the San Diego Convention Center.
If youre interested in supporting an honoree or participating in the event, contact Cyndi Meeves at (619) 398-8926, cyndi@sandiegometro.com. In the meantime, for more about these accomplished individuals, please read on.
