C3 Panel Examines the Use of Wastewater for Potable Use
Is the recycling of wastewater for potable use a safe and viable option for diversifying San Diego’s water supply, or a possible dangerous health issue? Those questions will be the subject of a panel discussion April 22 sponsored by Citizens Coordinate for Century III. The panel topic: “Showers to Flowers or Toilet to Tap: A Solution for the Region’s Water Supply?” The event will be held at the Holiday Inn Embarcadero, 1355 North Harbor Drive, in Downtown San Diego. Registration and breakfast is at 7:30 a.m. The program is from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Panelists will be Michael Markus, general manager of Orange County Water; Marsi Steirer, deputy director for long-range planning and water resources for the city of San Diego Public Utilities Department; and Rick Gersberg, professor of environmental health at San Diego State’s Graduate School of Public Health. Director of Research Named by Jones Lang LaSalle
Jones Lang LaSalle has appointed Eli Gilbert as director of research for the firm’s San Diego office. In his new role, Gilbert will be responsible for directing the firm’s local research program, which compiles statistics, produces market reports and analyzes industry trends to help clients make informed decisions. Gilbert also will collaborate with Jones Lang LaSalle landlord and tenant representation leasing teams. Prior to joining Jones Lang LaSalle, he was at Studley Inc. and he previously managed the research departments at Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial and Insignia/ESG. He also held research positions at CB Richard Ellis and Cushman & Wakefield.
Zeldes & Haeggquist Adds 2 Attorneys
Attorneys Amber Eck and Ricky Maveety have joined the San Diego law firm Zeldes & Haeggquist LLP. They have 37 years of combined experience in the legal field. Eck is a former partner at Coughlin, Stoia, Geller, Rudman & Robbins LLP (formerly Milberg Weiss) and has been practicing law for the past 15 years. Maveety joins the firm as of counsel. He has more than 20 years of experience in estate planning, business formation and transactional matters.
Qualcomm Inc. Promotes a Vice President to Senior Vice President
Qualcomm Inc. has promoted Xiang Wang to senior vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm Greater China. He replaces Frank Meng, who is leaving the company to pursue other opportunties. Jim Wang, executive vice president of Qualcomm for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, said Wang has successfully extended Qualcomm’s partnership to more than 50 Chinese manufacturing customers. Wang has more than 20 years of experience in the semiconductor and communications fields. Prior to joining Qualcomm, he held key positions in sales and marketing of several companies, including Motorola and Lucent/Agere. Wang earned a degree from Beijing Polytechnic University. He will continue to manage Qualcomm’s CDMA Technologies division in China.

• Raytheon Co. Integrated Defense Systems in San Diego was awarded a $14,222,122 federal contract by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command for the production of five ship self defense systems (SSDS) MK2 open architecture computing environment kits.
• NASSCO in San Diego was awarded a $10 million federal contract modification by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command for system designs associated with the Mobile Landing Platform program.
• Global Access Supply Inc. of San Diego won a $25,530 federal contract from the U.S. Army Contracting Command, Fort Bragg, N.C., to inspect, diagnose and repair the airfield lighting system.
• BAE Systems National Security Solutions Inc., San Diego, was awarded a $23,405,241 federal contract by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Reston, Va., for capabilities-based acquisition and disciplined program management, systems engineering, software engineering, hardware engineering and systems integration and testing. Place of performance will be in Newington, Va.
• Town & Country Resort Hotel in San Diego won a $31,281.85 federal contract from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Administration for a facility to host a one-day Pharmaceutical Controlled Substance Conference.
Kyoto Prize Symposium Set for April 20-22
The Inamori Foundation and the Kyoto Symposium Organization will host the ninth annual Kyoto Prize Symposium in San Diego on April 20-22. The three-day event will feature the latest recipients of the Kyoto Prize, Japan’s highest private award for global achievement, during public presentations on local university campuses — and will commemorate the milestone 25th anniversary of the international award. The benefit gala, “The Kyoto Prize: Celebrating Outstanding Lifetime Achievement,” will officially open the symposium at 5:30 p.m. on April 20 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina. Complimentary presentations by each laureate will follow, April 21-22, at UCSD, USD and San Diego State. Admission to university events is free. Online registration is required at kyotoprize.org.
The 25th Kyoto Prize Laureates:
• Drs. Peter and Rosemary Grant, evolutionary biologists and professors emeriti at Princeton University, are the laureates in “Basic Sciences” and the first husband-and-wife team to receive the award. Over nearly 40 years of field research on the Galápagos Islands, the Grants have demonstrated that natural selection allows the morphology and behavior of Darwin’s finches to change rapidly in response to environmental fluctuations. Their address, “In Darwin’s Footsteps,” will showcase their observations of rapid evolution,on April 21, 3:30-5 p.m. at UCSD.
• Dr. Isamu Akasaki, a semiconductor scientist, university professor at Nagoya University and professor at Meijo University in Japan, is the laureate in “Advanced Technology.” Akasaki pursued his dream to develop the world’s first blue Light-Emitting Diode (LED)—once considered impossible by the scientific community. His pioneering contributions to the development of blue LEDs and blue lasers have led to better data storage, sharper video and movies, and environment-friendly lighting products based on energy-saving LED technology. Akasaki will discuss “Enchanted Journeys in Blue Light” on April 22, 10 to 11:30 a.m. at San Diego State.
• Maestro Pierre Boulez, composer and conductor and honorary director of the Institute for Research and Coordination Acoustic/Music, is the laureate in “Arts and Philosophy.” Boulez has consistently set new trends in music composition, conducting, writing, and organizational administration, winning fame as the world’s “greatest composer of serial music.” He will conduct selections from his famous composition, “Sur Incises,” on April 22, 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. at USD.
San Diego Executives Featured at April 21 Panel Program
Higgs Fletcher & Mack and The Monger Company will sponsor an April 21 panel discussion — “Sharpen Your Competitive Edge in 2010” — featuring four San Diego executives.
