West Coast Tavern Keeps It Simple

How to become a stand-out in the burgeoning restaurant scene? In a community as quirky and diverse as North Park, with new eateries opening on every block, it’s getting harder and harder to do. Malcolm Appointed to Board of Port Commissioners

Former Imperial Beach City Councilman Dan Malcolm has been appointed to a four-year term on the Board of Port Commissioners as Imperial Beach’s representative. Malcolm was on the Imperial Beach council from 1999 to 2000 and was vice chair of the city’s Architectural Design Review Board. He currently serves as chairman of the Sharp Coronado Hospital board of directors and is a director on the Master Board of Directors for Sharp Healthcare. Malcolm has sat on the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board, San Diego Commercial Association of Realtors Board, South San Diego Economic Development Council Board, San Diego Association of Governments Shoreline Erosion Committee and was chairman of the Proposition BB Sweetwater School District Bond Oversight Committee which oversaw $325 million in improvements to the District’s 24

Free SBA Workshops

The San Diego district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration will hold two free small business workshops on Aug. 24 and 25. “Women’s Federal Dollars and Sense” will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 24 at the San Diego County Health Services Complex, 3851 Rosecrans St., San Diego. An “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” workshop will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 25 at the Mission Valley Resort, 875 Hotel Circle South, in Mission Valley. East County Business Showcase and Expo

East County’s largest Business Showcase and Expo will be held Sept. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 1400 E. Washington Ave. in El Cajon. The expo is a collaborative effort of the Santee, La Mesa and San Diego East County Chambers of Commerce. The general public is encouraged to attend and admission is free. Exhibitors may apply for a booth by contacting the Santee Chamber of Commerce, the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce or the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce at (619) 440-6161.

San Diego Paralegal Association Seminar

The San Diego Paralegal Association is asking members and nonmembers to attend a Sept. 4 seminar on research, writing and investigation and then enjoy a Padres game against the Colorado Rockies afterwards. The seminar,  good for MCLE credit, and networking will be held from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. in the Petco Park auditorium, 100 Park Blvd. Downtown. Dillon Promoted to Assistant General Manager at Barona

Nick Dillon has been promoted to executive vice president/assistant general manager at Barona Resort & Casino. Dillon began his career at Barona more than 18 years ago and most recently was the casino’s senior vice president of gaming operations. He started as a bingo clerk in 1990, one of nine positions he has held at the Lakeside resort. Since 1997, he has led Barona’s gaming operations team and has directed all aspects of the casino including bingo, poker, table games, slots, off track betting, Club Barona and player development. Dillon earned a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University.
