Artist With A Big Canvas

Most actors like to see their names in lights. Illustrator Blair Thornley prefers big buildings, magazines and newspapers to demonstrate her gestural characters. The latest canvas on which Thornley’s illustrations are featured is the North Park Parking Garage at North Park Way and 30th Street. Thornley, a

Blair Thornley

North Park resident, answered a call for submissions in the spring of 2008 from North Park Main Street, which administers the North Park Business Improvement District. The effort to feature art on the building is part of the organization’s mission to promote art and culture in the neighborhood. The public art project is sponsored by the Redevelopment Agency of the city of San Diego.

Thornley is a nationally known illustrator. She has drawn her characters for such publications as The New York Times, Neiman Marcus, Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Atlantic Monthly and The Boston Globe. Her whimsical animations, based on her illustration style — both written and animated by Thornley, and produced by documentary filmmaker husband Wolfgang Hastert, has aired on the top European arts channel, ARTE/ZDF. The illustrations also were screened at the Krakow Film Festival.

Thornley lends the magic of her illustrations into paintings that showcase her quirky view of the world. She exhibited her car paintings in a show titled “Automobile” at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, the Judy A Saslow Gallery in Chicago, and shows regularly at the Harmon Gallery, Wellfleet, Mass. Last year she showed recent paintings at Coalesce Gallery in San Diego.

Locally, Thornley has done murals at Jet Rhys Salon in Hillcrest and  at  Albert Einstein Academy in South Park. She has painted transformer boxes Downtown and in University Heights. Sixteen of her drawings were blown up onto very large banners and installed on the four sides of the parking garage across from the North Park Theatre.

Thornley illustrates the monthly Expert Advice column in San Diego Home and Garden and teaches at UCSD Extension and at City College.
