SDSU President to be Named Next Week
The three finalists for the presidency of San Diego State University are scheduled to be interviewed by the California State University Board of Trustees next Monday, who will name the new president later that week. The new president will succeed Stephen Weber, who is retiring from the job he began in 1966. Two of the candidates — Elliot Hirshman, provost and senior vice president at the University of Maryland, and Steven Leath, vice president for research and sponsored programs in the University of North Carolina system — visited the campus earlier this week. The other candidate, Paul Zingg, president of California State University, is to visit the campus today.
Hirshman has served as provost and senior vice president of University of Maryland, Baltimore County, since 2008 where he is responsible for all aspects of the academic program, including instruction, research, academic support services, as well as enrollment management, admissions, financial aid and Division I intercollegiate athletics. Previously, Hirshman served as chief research officer at George Washington University from 2005 to 2008, where he also served as chair of the Department of Psychology from 2002 to 2005. He was also chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Colorado at Denver (2000 to 2002); special assistant to the provost, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1998-1999) and an American Council on Education Fellow in the office of the provost and president at Arizona State University.
Leath has served as vice president of research and sponsored programs at the University of North Carolina system since 2007. In this capacity, Leath promotes research and sponsored programs across the full spectrum of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary activities carried out by UNC’s 16 university campuses. From 2005 to 2007, he served as associate dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, as well as director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, where he also held positions including director and professor. Previously, Leath was a research leader and plant pathologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture as well as an assistant professor of plant pathology at North Carolina State University, Raleigh.
Paul J. Zingg
Zingg has been president of California State University Chico since 2004, and from 1993 to 2004 served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He also served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts at SLO. Prior to joining the CSU, Zingg was the dean, School of the Liberal Arts at Saint Mary’s College of California from 1986 to 1993. He also served as executive assistant to the president at the University of Pennsylvania and as an American Council on Education Fellow in Academic Administration. While at the University of Pennsylvania, Zingg also served as vice dean for undergraduate studies and admissions in the College of Arts and Science as well as an assistant dean for academic advising.
Real Estate Sales:
Medical-Professional Center — San Diego-based Pathfinder Partners LLC has acquired The Eastlake Medical and Professional Center, an office and medical condominium project located on Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista’s Eastlake area. Pathfinder has listed the property, renamed Eastlake Professional Center, withCassidy Turley BRE Commercial. Mitch Siegler, senior managing director of Pathfinder Partners, said his company purchased the 68,000-square-foot property at a foreclosure sale in April. The original borrower defaulted on the $16.3 million loan and was embroiled in litigation with the lender, preventing the sale of any condos, Siegler said. The center, which consists of six Class A office buildings on 4.2 acres, contains 10 suites ranging from 5,200 to 10,700 square feet.
El Cajon Building — An industrial building at 165 Denny Way in El Cajon has been sold for $2.5 million. The 44,424-square-foot building was purchased in lieu of foreclosure with Independence Bank. Ibark LLC was Independence Bank’s REO holding company. The building was originally built in 1986 as Valley Bowl and has been used as a granite/stone manufacturing site for the past 10 years. Ken Ruppert, Kerry Schimpf and Cameron Czubernat of Cassidy Turley BRE Commercial represented the seller, IBARC LLC. Erik Wiese of Wiese & Associates represented the buyer, Hormuth Properties Inc.
Industrial Building — A 4,941-square-foot industrial building at 8605 Commerce Ave. in San Diego has been sold for $745,000 to Shervin Darvish by Commerce Office Holdings LLC. One-half of the building is currently leased. Shervin Darvish will operate its business, Annex PBE, which specializes in automotive and industrial finishes, out of the other half. Randy LaChance and Jon Danton of Voit Real Estate represented the seller. Arnie Friedman and Evan McDonald of Colliers International represented the buyer.
Cardiovascular Institute Under Way
Construction has begun on the Scripps Cardiovascular Institute, the first of three new towers planned at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla as part of its 25-year master plan. The 383,000-square-foot Cardiovascular Institute and adjacent 26,000-square-foot central energy plan are expected to be completed in January 2015 with tenant move-in the following April. Scripps Health retained McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. as the design-assist general contractor in 2009 and since then it has been working on preconstruction for the new $465 million project at 9888 Genesee Ave. Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. is the construction management firm. HOK Architects is the project architect. The new towers will eventually replace the existing hospital. The campus also will include research and graduate medical education facilities, an outpatient treatment center and medical offices.
Scripps officials say the Cardiovascular Institute will be a destination hospital for cardiac care on the West Coast, offering cardiology programs of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Scripps Clinic/Scripps Green Hospital, and Kaiser Permanente to provide patients with cardiovascular diseases the most advanced treatment options available, while also serving as a center for medical research, clinical trials and graduate medical education. Scripps and Kaiser recently agreed to a 10-year extension of their 30-year partnership.
Sycuan Casino Plans Major Renovations
Sycuan Casino in rural El Cajon has begun a full interior renovation of the casino gaming areas to include the creation of an all new nonsmoking buffet, a new sports bar and grill restaurant and new specialty lighting in the main lobby. Design work is by the Hnedak Bobo Group. Due for completion on May 27 is Paipa’s Buffet, which will be in a new location. Renovations to the buffet include a new kitchen, seating to fit 320 people, more specialty food stations and design elements. Executive Chef Paul Schwab will incorporate new menu items including brick oven pizza, a fresh pasta station, tortillas, grilled steaks and a new dessert bar. On Aug. 31, Sycuan Casino will reveal a 15-foot diameter specialty lighting feature hung from the atrium ceiling. The new GameDay Sports Bar & Grill also will open on Aug. 31. Other renovations include visual upgrades to the Poker Room, Off Track Betting Room, Bingo Pavilion, gift shop and the restrooms.
Chula Vista Nature Center Receives $20,000 Grant
The Goodrich Foundation has awarded the Chula Vista Nature Center a $20,000 grant to help fund construction of an outdoor classroom and Discovery Park at the preserve, located near the Goodrich Aerostructures campus. Roger Ross, vice president of regional and engine programs for Goodrich Aerostructures, was recently appointed to the Nature Center’s board of directors and said the grant will help embellish one of the area’s natural treasures. The Nature Center opened more than 23 years ago and attracts about 65,000 visitors a year. It is home to more than 150 native species and animals and nearly 200 native plant specials. The new park and classroom area will double the capacity for onsite field trips and day camp programs and will feature hands-on learning. The area will include fencing, benches made from recycled plastic and picnic tables along the periphery, as well as a stage and shaded area for animal and educational presentations. Total cost of the outdoor classroom and Discovery Park project will be about $100,000.
Union Bank Names Regional Sales Manager
William A. Bilicki has joined Union Bank’s consumer lending team as a regional sales manager in San Diego. He will be responsible for the growth of residential lending throughout San Diego County. Bilicki has nearly 20 years of experience in consumer lending. Previously, he worked for JP Morgan Chase and was a senior vice president and general manager of West Coast lending operations at Wachovia Bank. He holds a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University.
Aires Pharmaceuticals Hires Chief Medical Officer
Aires Pharmaceuticals Inc. has hired Ed Parsley as chief medical officer, responsible for clinical development activities for Aironite, the company’s lead product for treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Parsley previously was with Pfizer and was the clinical lead for clinical trials for Pfizer’s Revatio drug and other products that treat pulmonary vascular disease. Parsley also worked at CSL Biotherapies and Encysive Pharmaceuticals Inc. where he was the executive director for global medical affairs and drug safety. He was an assistant professor and medical director at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.
Arthur Ollman, director of the School of Art, Design and Art History at San Diego State, will give a May 19 presentation on the many photographic works of famed photographer Imogen Cunningham at 7 p.m. in the Art Expressions Gallery at 2645 Financial Court, Suite C, in San Diego. Ollman will discuss Cunningham’s career, artwork and character and how her photography fit into its time. The event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 to ArtsBusXpress, a nonprofit that provides transportation for school field trips. Ollman, the founding director of the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park, met the Cunningham while he was a young art student in San Francisco in 1974. She died in 1976 at the age of 93. Ollman’s presentation is in conjunction with the Art Expressions Gallery exhibition of portraits, botanicals and nudes by Cunningham, which is open now through June 11. The works in the exhibition span her 70-year career and include portraits of some of the most renowned artists of Cunningham’s time, including painter Frida Kahlo, dancer Martha Graham and photographers Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston.
