Harbor Island’s Marina Cove to Undergo Renovations

The Board of Port Commissioners has approved plans for the renovation of Marina Cortez, one of the first developments at Harbor Island that was builtin 1969. The plans include the renovation of the marina’s main and support buildings, construction of a shoreline promenade and construction of a new elevator tower. The board also approved an option agreement with Marina Cortez for a new 40-year lease. Marina owners recently invested $7.34 million to replace all of its marina slips. The work, which was completed in spring 2010, involved the removal of the marina’s concrete docks and replacing them with a hardwood deck float system. Twenty-one new marina slips were added, giving the marina a total of 545 slips.

The new improvement project entails renovating all of the buildings on the marina’s property, resurfacing the parking lot and adding new landscaping and lighting. Renovating the main building involves extensive exterior work, including removing existing exterior architectural arches, adding new windows, a new roof and new stucco. New utility systems, such as upgraded electrical and plumbing, will be required. The new elevator is to comply with ADA requirements. The new 6-foot-wide shoreline promenade will span the entire length of the property and connect to Harbor Island Drive. It will be open to the public.

City Employees Win Fleet Maintenance Work

City employees have won the bid to provide fleet maintenance services under the managed competition program initiated by Mayor Sanders. Their proposal will yield an annual savings of $4.4 million, or $22 million over the five-year life of the proposal, according to Sanders. The group that won the bid currently performs maintenance for the more than 4,000 vehicles used in city operations, including police, fire, trash collection, utility service and repair, park maintenance and general services. “Their proposal slashed costs for providing the service by more than 13 percent over the current budget for vehicle maintenance through such efficiency measures as rethinking the entire network in order to eliminate some facilities; use of automated systems as well as contracting out costly warehousing operations,” said Sanders. City employees have also won the bid to provide printing services to the city, a bid that will result in $1 million in annual savings, according to the mayor.

“We’re currently in the process of bidding out street sweeping, landfill operations and customer service for public utilities,” said Sanders.
