South Bay Power Plant Contamination Study to be Sought

The Board of Port Commissioners will be asked by staff on Tuesday to approve an agreement with Tetra Tech Inc. to determine whether there is any contamination at the South Bay Power Plant site. Meanwhile, Dynegy South Bay Inc. is pursing a coastal development permit from the California Coastal Commission for the dismantling of the power plant. The permit is a precursor to the city of Chula Vista issuing a demolition order for the above-ground structures. In August, Dynegy began asbestos abatement at the plant, located at 990 Bay Boulevard in Chula Vista. Tenting is currently covering the plant’s structures. The asbestos abatement is expected to continue through May 2012.

Health Care Group Becomes ActivCare Living

Health Care Group has changed its name to ActivCare Living to reflect its decision to focus solely on its memory care platform for seniors with memory loss. The San Diego-based company said it intends to grow and expand its presence in Southern California with its residential memory care communities, including ActivCare at Bressi Ranch, which opened in Carlsbad in November adding 60 new jobs to the region, Long Beach-based ActivCare at Brittany House, which serves more than 100 residents with memory loss and a future community in east Chula Vista, which the organization is currently planning. “For the past 25 years we have cared for more than 4,000 individuals with memory loss through our ActivCare program at our various senior communities,” said W. Major Chance, founder and chief executive officer.  “This strategic direction allows us to focus entirely on what we do best, as well as address a growing need.  As the baby boom generation reaches 75 years and older, there will be a tremendous increase in the number of individuals who experience the different stages of memory loss.”

Clean Energy Rebates Offered

A program that rewards businesses, building owners, industry and homeowners for installing clean energy systems is taking applications for more than $10 million in rebates for the San Diego region, according to the California Center for Sustainable Energy. The Self-Generation Incentive Program, or SGIP, provides cash for a wide range of sustainable energy technologies that can save energy, shrink utility costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The SGIP is a statewide initiative of the California Public Utilities Commission designed to promote power generation by utility customers. Its purpose is to help achieve state energy goals of generating one-third of California’s electricity from renewable sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. CCSE administers SGIP in the San Diego Gas & Electric service area. For more information, visit energycenter.org.
