Team Formed to Standardize Solar Installations

The California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) has been awarded $700,000 to lead 11 jurisdictions and five utilities across Southern California to streamline and standardize the installation of solar systems. The group will develop guidelines for the uniform permitting and connection of rooftop solar systems with the aim of reducing the cost of the installations and making solar installations competitive with other energy sources.

The CCSE team includes Los Angeles County and the cities of San Diego, Los Angeles, Chula Vista, Anaheim, Long Beach, Santa Ana, Santa Monica, Palm Desert, Pasadena and Palmdale. It also includes members of the Energy Policy Initiatives Center at the University of San Diego School of Law who will provide support on legal issues.

The CCSE team will begin in January 2012 by reviewing existing solar policies and procedures of the 11 jurisdictions in conjunction with the utility companies servicing the areas — Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, Los Angeles Department of Power and Water, Anaheim Public Utilities and Pasadena Water & Power.

“While the Southern California rooftop solar market is robust and growing, there remain considerable ongoing barriers to scaling up solar even more aggressively, in large part resulting from inconsistencies among jurisdictions for project planning, permitting and utility interconnection,” said Andrew McAllister, CCSE director of planning and strategy. “Local governments have high goals for reductions in carbon emissions, but few dedicated resources. CCSE is thrilled to be able to support the build out of local plans for greater deployment of clean solar energy.”

Aztecs to Play in New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 17

San Diego State has accepted an invitation to play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl against the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m. The football game will be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La., and will be televised on ESPN. The Aztecs are 8-4 and Ragin’ Cajuns are 8-4.

Prior to 2010 and 2011, the Aztecs had never played in a postseason bowl game in consecutive seasons in the school’s Division I era. The only time the program has participated in bowl games in back-to-back years was in 1966 and 1967, when the squad advanced to the Camellia Bowl while competing in the College Division. Last season, San Diego State defeated Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium for the school’s first bowl victory since 1969. This will be the first meeting between the two foes and the Aztecs’ first against a member of the Sun Belt Conference since defeating Arkansas State 24-14 in San Diego in 1976.
