FORUM: Special Presentation Overview:
We are witnessing the vulnerabilities of traditional business models in today’s turbulent economy. Now is an opportune time to explore and consider alternative means of starting, conducting, and sustaining business.
Employee ownership is on the rise. San Diego is home to more than 100 companies that have significant employee ownership and broad-based stock options and profit sharing. Across the country, thousands of companies and millions of employees have benefited from the shared risks and rewards of broad-based employee ownership of company stock. From large companies like Microsoft, Google, and SAIC to many small to mid-size firms in a variety of industries like Kleinfelder, Whole Foods, and ATA Engineering (Named as One of the Top 15 Small Workplaces by Wall Street Journal and Winning Workplaces), employee ownership has fostered widespread participation in innovative industries, and has helped promote innovative business practices in management, communication, and operations, to more fully empower employees as owners of successful companies.
To discuss this growing trend at the July 22nd Forum are a number of national experts who will provide practical insights on what works and doesn’t work.
What will you learn?
• What forms of employee-ownership have stimulated and sustained performance across industry sectors in good and tough economic times, and what lessons can be relevant to San Diego companies?
• How does ownership work in terms of financing, compensating, and governing at different stages of a company’s life cycle from start-up to more mature companies which are considering converting to employee-owned?
• What are new business models in high technology, life sciences, and clean technology for applying broad-based ownership, and what types of rewards/risk should companies in these industries expect?
Who should attend?
• Executives, senior managers, and board members of start-up, small and mid-size companies in a range of industries with special emphasis on high technology, science and manufacturing organizations.
• Professional service providers in the fields of leadership, organizational development as well as financing, accounting, compensation, and human resource management.
Who will be presenting?
The panel will be moderated by David Binns whose 25 years of experience in the employee ownership field includes managing a national trade association for companies with employee ownership plans and consulting to hundreds of companies in the U.S and abroad with a wide range of ownership programs. Mr Binns is currently the COO of MacFadden, a company that he helped become wholly-owned by its employees.
The panel includes faculty and center leaders participating in the FED-sponsored Beyster fellowships program from Carnegie Mellon, Rutgers, and UCSD/Beyster Institute. Collectively, this panel of senior leaders has a range of expertise from researching and working with start-up and early-stage growth companies. Industries they have studied and/or have been actively employed by include: life sciences, energy and clean technology, internet and advanced software, and other science and technology-based industries. They bring perspectives on applying broad-based ownership and profit sharing, and will offer opinions on the significance of broad-based ownership on innovation in the 21st century corporation.

PRESENTATION: Program Overview:
Biofuels, defined as solid, liquid or gaseous fuel obtained from lifeless or living biological materials and various plants and plant-derived materials, are positioned to provide a revolutionary new source of energy. They can be produced domestically, at reasonable cost, by re-cycling carbon dioxide from the air so that no pollution is created, and climate change is slowed, which garners them a significant competitive advantage. Biofuels have the ability to mitigate the risks posed to our national security and economy by competition for coal and oil, and by climate change. However, there are formidable obstacles to overcome in order to switch from the use of ancient energy sources to these new, renewable energy sources. Crop plants and trees are currently being used for biofuel production, but don’t grow fast enough to meet existing needs. Photosynthetic microbes do grow fast enough, but the technology and infrastructure required to produce them on a global scale does not yet exist.
San Diego has emerged as a hub for academic and industrial biotechnology research, poised to solve the challenges of biofuel production. Success could ultimately lead to the replacement of fossil fuels by a renewable energy industry, and the transformation of San Diego into a world leader in biofuel innovation.
Who Should Attend
Scientists, engineers, physicians, healthcare leaders, venture capitalists, technology and life sciences professionals, services providers, and business leaders.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Steven Briggs is currently a professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California (UC), San Diego. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Briggs has an acclaimed history as an innovator in the field of plant genomics. Dr. Briggs was the first person to isolate and characterize a plant gene for resistance to infectious disease, as well as the first to discover a natural mechanism for plant resistance to infection. He also invented the first reverse genetics technology for plants, which is still widely used in maize research, and was the first to use artificial transcription factors to regulate endogenous genes in plants.
In 1998, Dr. Briggs founded the Torrey Mesa Research Institute (originally as the Novartis Agricultural Discovery Institute). As President and CEO of TMRI, he led the team that produced a draft sequence of the rice genome, which provided a framework for genomics in all other grass crops (maize, wheat, barley, oats, rye, and sugarcane). Under his direction, TMRI created the first plant (Arabidopsis) GeneChip, the first reverse genetics technology for Arabidopsis, the first crop GeneChip (for rice), the first exon GeneChip (for Arabidopsis), and the first large-scale plant proteome (for rice).
His current research explores infectious disease in plants and the regulation of self-renewal and pluripotency in embryonic stem cells. In addition to his many academic accolades, Dr. Briggs has extensive industry experience. As Research Director at Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Dr. Briggs supervised the combined genomics program between Pioneer and DuPont. As Senior Vice President for Corporate Research at Diversa, Dr. Briggs invented the Designed Regulatory Protein (DRP) technology that can regulate any human gene.
Dr. Briggs received his B.S. in botany from the University of Vermont, and his Ph.D. in plant pathology from Michigan State University.

WORKSHOP: The commercial real estate (CRE) world has changed more dramatically in the past 2 years than at any other time since The Great Depression. Tenants are unable to pay their rent and are forced to request lease restructuring from landlords. Landlords are then faced with requesting relief from their lenders, and many may still find themselves in default. However, a well thought out occupancy strategy can turn these perils into unprecedented opportunity. This workshop, an updated reprise of last year’s well received session, will discuss strategies to make these realities work best for you and your business, will offer valuable ideas to implement and potential hazards to avoid. In addition, there will be a panelist discussion featuring a case study of the new corporate headquarters for Carl Zeiss Vision, offering practical lessons learned that apply to companies of any size.
What you will learn:
• Relocate v. Renew, Lease v. Own, Direct Lease v. Sublease, and Build-to-Suit v. Existing Buildings;
• Using Commute Studies and the New Psychographics to strategically position your company;
• Benefits of putting the ideal relocation team and process in place;
• Key Lease or Purchase Agreement Clauses to obtain, with an emphasis on items that are more important than ever in the current CRE crisis.
Who should attend:
Founders, CEOs, CFOs, COOs and leaders of technology companies that want to reduce occupancy costs on existing leases and/or are contemplating a relocation, renewal or expansion in the next few years. Attorneys, accountants and other service providers who want to add valuable ideas into their skill set of tenant advice.
About the Presenter:
Dennis Hearst is a Senior Director at Cushman & Wakefield and specializes in Corporate Tenant Representation, Build-to-Suit Representation, and Commercial Building Sales. He has 29 years of experience in the industry, and in the last 12 years alone, he has successfully negotiated lease and sale transactions with a combined value in excess of $1.2 billion in total consideration.

Volunteer: Mark your calendar for the biggest volunteer cleanup event in San Diego County and join together with your community in keeping our ocean, coastlines and waterways clean and free of debris.
Each year, San Diego Coastkeeper (SDCK), I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) and the California Coastal Commission partner to coordinate more than 70 coastal, inland and underwater cleanup sites throughout San Diego County as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD), an annual statewide and international cleanup effort to support the marine environment.
Last year 7,729 volunteers participated in removing 179,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from San Diego County and Baja California beaches. CCD is a great way for the community to help restore our beaches and waterways, and learn how individual action can make a tremendous difference to keep our beaches and watersheds pollution free.

FAIR: Go plum crazy as you take a step back in time at the Ninth Annual Fall Back Festival, a Children’s Historical and Cultural Street Faire, in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. This year’s fun-filled festivities will take place on Sunday, November 1st, 2009 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM in front of the William Heath Davis House at 4th and Island. Each year as we set our clocks back an hour, the Gaslamp Quarter falls back into time to the 1880s when Bum the Dog and Alonzo Horton roomed the streets. Climb aboard and old-fashioned hay ride and take a tour of the town as you try to picture the dusty dirt roads, bustling vendors and talented blacksmiths. Watch your little ones strike it rich just like the forty-niners as they pan for gold. Get a front row seat as San Diego’s own, Wyatt Earp defends 4th Avenue from the Outlaws and then be sure to turn your attention and cover your ears for a live cannon demonstration! Show the youngins’ how life was like before those modern luxuries as they try their hands at churning butter or capture a family portrait dressed in traditional time period outfits. Don’t forget to grab your spurs and saddle up for an adventurous pony ride or take a moment to relax and pet the llamas. As your belly starts to rumble, scurry over to enjoy some rootin’ tootin’ grub or enter one our fancy schmancy pie and ice cream eating contests to make off with all kinds of loot! Adults and children can take part in this shindig for only $5.00 and baby buckaroos under two are free. With loads of historical demonstrators and interactive activities this is the perfect event to spend the afternoon among your family and friends.
