San Diego City Council Passes Major Parking Increases In 5-2 Vote

By Evan Symon | California Globe

The San Diego City Council passed sweeping city parking changes this week, with street parking costs expected to go up as a result.

According to the new rules okayed by the City Council, the city will institute dynamic pricing, which will allow the city to increase meter rates during high traffic times, like during special events or during San Diego Padres games. Also being added is charging for Sunday parking. While many cities across the country have free weekend or Sunday parking for streets and city lots to encourage more visits into the city to help local businesses, and to not charge those simply wishing to attend religious services, San Diego opted to move away from that model.

In addition, higher fees will be coming for valet parking permit applications and permits for blocking parking spaces during construction and other events. Changes to city owned lots are being planned as well.

California Lawmaker Leads Voter ID Ballot Initiative Signature Campaign

By Cynthia Cai | The Epoch Times

A California lawmaker is leading an attempt to place an initiative on the 2026 ballot to require voter ID as a statewide constitutional amendment.

Republican Assemblyman Carl DeMaio of San Diego is seeking volunteers to help gather signatures and raise funds to let voters decide on two issues: whether citizenship should be verified at the time of voter registration and whether IDs should be required when casting a ballot. The petition is set to begin collecting signatures later this year.

“I know that the system is corrupt and is not going to want to reform itself from the inside,” DeMaio told The Epoch Times, referring to his proposed legislation with similar goals that failed to pass.

FDA Not Recommending Newly Approved COVID-19 Vaccine: Official

By Zachary Stieber | The Epoch Times

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new COVID-19 vaccine, but it is not recommending that people receive it, the agency’s top vaccine officials said on June 4.

“There’s another misconception I want to clarify, which is, people have said, ‘You at FDA are recommending the shots to high-risk people and older people.’ I want to be very clear, the FDA is not your doctor. We are not; we don’t recommend shots to people,” Dr. Vinay Prasad, head of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a video released by the agency.

“What we do is we make them available for patients to have a conversation with their doctor. But I can understand a 66-year-old who goes to see their doctor, and they may decide to do it or not do it; that’s their medical decision. FDA is granting a marketing authorization for that, but we are not in the business of making recommendations.”
