Conservatorship Expansion Fears Haven’t Played Out – For Now

A county vote on a state conservatorship expansion law got lots of attention from local hospitals, activists and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria a couple years ago.

Hospitals warned that if the county immediately enacted SB 43, which aimed to make more people eligible for short-term involuntary holds and conservatorships, patients would overwhelm local emergency rooms. Supervisors ultimately decided to punt for a year despite protests from Gloria and some mental health advocates.

So what’s happened since the county implemented the state law in January? Our Lisa Halverstadt found that there hasn’t been a flood of new patients into local hospitals – yet.

Trump Announces Apple’s Additional $100 Billion US Investment Plan

President Donald Trump announced on Aug. 6 that Apple will increase its U.S. investment commitment by an additional $100 billion, which comes on top of the more than $500 billion in investments that the tech giant unveiled in February for the next four years.

“These investments will directly create more than 20,000 brand-new American jobs and many thousands more at the Apple suppliers like Corning, Broadcom, Texas Instruments, and Samsung,” Trump said in the Oval Office, standing alongside Apple CEO Tim Cook.

“As part of this historic commitment, Apple will massively increase spending on its domestic supply chain for the iPhone and will build the largest and most sophisticated Smart Glass production line in the world in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.”

Three Exciting Concerts, the Annual Gala, and “Tasting Notes,” a Culinary and Musical Experience

La Jolla Music Society (LJMS)’ annual SummerFest’s third week presents three exciting concerts: “Strung Together,” “Homage,” and “Looking Back,” as well as the annual SummerFest Gala on August 9. The week will culminate with “Tasting Notes,” an event blending culinary and musical arts featuring four renowned guest chefs including J. Kenji López-Alt and Claudette Zepeda.

SummerFest returns to The Conrad through August 23, 2025, bringing the finest chamber musicians in the world to La Jolla for four weeks of glorious concerts. Returning in his seventh year, Music Director Inon Barnatan has created an exciting program on the theme “Milestones,”celebrating the breakthroughs, turning points, and quiet revolutions that shape both an artist and their art.

Below are the events in Week Three. All concerts are in The Baker-Baum Concert Hall unless otherwise noted.

The Jacobs Residence

Patrons will admire the colors of a Pacific sunset as they enjoy an elegant Champagne and caviar reception. After a musical interlude, curated by SummerFest Music Director Inon Barnatan, they will move on to a gourmet dinner with a special selection of wines on the pool patio. Dessert stations and dancing will round out the night. This night supports La Jolla Music Society’s Learning and Engagement programs, which touch nearly 11,000 school children and adults each year. Information and tickets:

In this Synergy Series event, James Beard Award-winning culinary icon J. Kenji López-Alt leads an extraordinary exploration of the parallels between music and food. As a dynamic ensemble of world-class musicians performs works including Dvořák’s Piano Quintet, one of four acclaimed guest chefs—curated by López-Alt—will prepare a dish live on stage, their creative process projected in real time for the audience to witness. Between movements, chefs and musicians engage in a lively conversation about their shared artistry, improvisation, and inspiration. Tasting Notes is a multisensory experience unlike any other at SummerFest—an unforgettable meeting of culinary and musical mastery.
