Health care costs and mental health access weigh on Californians, poll shows

By Ana B. Ibarra | CalMatters

Californians are overwhelmingly concerned about the costs of health care, and most want better access to mental health services, according to a new poll released Thursday. The survey – commissioned by the California Wellness Foundation – also found that beyond broader economic worries, 57% of respondents statewide are concerned about federal immigration enforcement actions, which are influencing some health-related choices.

“Californians don’t see health as a single dimension, it really is about an overall quality of life,” said Shakari Byerly, managing partner at Evitarus, the research firm that conducted the polling.

Nearly 40% of state residents surveyed said they know someone whose mental health has worsened as a result of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. One in five people indicated that they know someone who is afraid to seek medical care because of immigration activity.

California’s chronic deficit looms again as Newsom prepares his last state budget

By Dan Walters | CalMatters

It seems like just yesterday that Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislators enacted a state budget that papered over a $20 billion gap between income and outgo while blaming President Donald Trump for their fiscal dilemma.

It was, in fact, less than four months ago that Newsom signed the $321 billion, 2025-26 budget, saying, “As we confront Donald Trump’s economic sabotage, this budget agreement proves California won’t just hold the line — we’ll go even further. It’s balanced, it maintains substantial reserves, and it’s focused on supporting Californians — slashing red tape and catapulting housing and infrastructure development, preserving essential healthcare services, funds universal pre-K, and cuts taxes for veterans.”

Trump, however, had nothing to do with what state officials have described as a “structural deficit,” meaning that spending encased in current law outstrips revenue expectations. Rather, it stems from what officialdom later acknowledged as a $165 billion error in revenue projections in 2022 that fueled Newsom’s boast of having a $97.5 billion surplus. That, in turn, resulted in a sharp increase in spending.

Gavin Newsom is Lying and There Wasn’t an Explosion at Camp Pendleton

By Matt Quan | California Globe

A day after an artillery demonstration at Camp Pendleton, California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Tony Coronado in a press release claimed one of its patrol videos was hit by shrapnel. This supposedly justified Gov. Gavin Newsom’s shutdown of the 5 freeway and opposition to the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marines Corps, which was attended by Vice President JD Vance. However, CHP is controlled by Newsom and faked the incident, which was then parroted as “truth” by local, state, and national media mouthpieces.

Background

Since 1942, Camp Pendleton has conducted live fire exercises and amphibious assaults for the U.S. Marines Corps. Pendleton is critical for the U.S. and its allies to deter and defend Taiwan against China in the Pacific.

On Saturday, October 18, 2025, Vice President JD Vance, a Marine and Iraq War veteran, attended a review of the Marinesthat included an artillery demonstration, for the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marines Corps.
