Balboa Park Parking Could Bring in More Money

A proposed paid parking plan for Balboa Park is now projected to bring in $15.5 million for fiscal year 2026.

That’s up from earlier estimates, which suggested that charging for parking at San Diego’s crown jewel would bring in $12.5 million.

City officials want to start charging for parking by Oct. 1, but the San Diego City Council still has to approve rates for surface lots and meters.

Tijuana River sewage crisis also polluting air, new study finds

It’s not just in the water.

A UC San Diego study discovered a new connection between the decades-long Tijuana River sewage crisis and air quality in South Bay.

The study, titled “Heavily polluted Tijuana River drives regional air quality crisis,” was conducted over a three-week period from August to September 2024 and published Thursday in the journal Science.

La Jolla Music Society and SummerFest Music Director Inon Barnatan Agree to New Five-Year Contract

As a successful SummerFest 2025 draws to a close at The Conrad, La

Jolla Music Society (LJMS)’s leadership announced it has come to an agreement with Music Director Inon Barnatan for a new five-year contract, through 2030.

Barnatan, an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, has been Music Director of SummerFest since 2019. In that role he creates the theme and programming for the summer festival concerts and selects the musical artists who will perform them.

“Inon’s artistic vision has propelled SummerFest to new heights, uniting a vibrant community of world-class musicians, jazz artists, and dancers who are eager to share the stage with him, ” says LJMS Artistic Director Leah Rosenthal.

“I am delighted to continue this journey together over the next five years, particularly as we look ahead to celebratingmour landmark 40th anniversary festival in 2026.”
