Live Nation’s new venue could give your favorite band more options when it comes to playing in San Diego. But it probably won’t help you much as a consumer.
The entertainment giant announced Aug. 17 that it’ll be converting San Diego’s old Wonder Bread factory located on the outskirts of East Village. Just days before the announcement, the independent venue Brick by Brick closed its doors and the Bancroft in East County announced it would do the same.
But on the whole, those in the industry say San Diego has a relatively healthy music venue ecosystem, though cost-wise, like everywhere else, it has become more challenging for fans. The proposed Live Nation site, though, fills one particular gap.

Earlier this week, our Jim Hinch took a deep dive into the financial payoff from the long-wanted Gaylord Hotel in Chula Vista.
Now Hinch is zooming in on other expected benefits including jobs, event bookings, tourism and whether the hotel and convention center are drawing in other nearby developments.
His verdict: the jobs are real but success on event bookings isn’t yet clear. And the story behind a development that the Port of San Diego has pointed to as proof that Gaylord is driving new building in the area doesn’t exactly match the narrative that boosters are touting.
Bulk sugar import facility set for Port of San Diego’s Tenth Avenue terminal

A new facility may be coming to the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal – solely focused on something sweet.
Raw sugar, up to 280,000 metric tons a year, is expected to be imported to the Port of San Diego’s planned storage facilities. And for the first time at the port, electric trucks will transport the sugar.
The port’s Board of Commissioners recently approved the agreements necessary to begin planning the sustainable project with Mexico’s Zucarmex, as long as California Sugar Equipment, LLC, fulfills terms of an option-to-lease agreement within 18 months.
