ACLU asks court to compel San Diego to do away with Flock cameras, stored data

The plaintiffs argue that the technology, due to the high density of cameras throughout the city of San Diego, violates the right to privacy protected in the California constitution.

By retaining ALPR data for a month-long period, the plaintiffs claim SDPD can create a pattern based on people’s movements throughout the city – and others with whom they associate too.

“And let’s be clear: These cameras do not just take an individual snapshot of an individual license plate so that somebody’s car can be looked up later,” Frederick Carroll, legal director at the ACLU foundation, said.

Council Candidates Say It’s Time for Mayor to Hire a COO

San Diego City Council candidates have another bone to pick with City Hall.

Last week, thousands of residents received overcharges and undercharges for the city’s trash fee on their property tax bill. The city sent bad billing information for roughly 87,700 customers to the county tax collector’s office, as NBC San Diego first reported. A data transfer mistake led to the error.

Ahead of the November election, I asked City Council candidates to weigh in on the mistake. Most said they weren’t surprised and that this was just another example of operational failures at City Hall. They say the city needs a chief operating officer, despite the mayor taking reins of the role last year.

Families of Islamic Center victims sue San Diego Unified for refusing to turn over records on teen shooter

The family members of the three people shot and killed by two radicalized teens at the Islamic Center of San Diego want to know what warning signs, if any, the San Diego Unified School District may have seen leading up to the shooting.

The families say the school district is unwilling to provide any records, claiming the documents are confidential.

The family members of Amin Abdullah, Nadir Awad and Mansour Kaziha, who were shot and killed on May 18 by 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez, are now asking a San Diego Superior Court Judge to force the district’s hand.
