South County Goes Full YIMBY

South County leaders are bullish on housing.

In a series of candidate forums last week, including our own Politifest, candidates for mayor in National City and Chula Vista, along with San Diego City Council District 8 candidate Antonio Martinez, voiced strong support for high-density housing, public transit, walkable shopping districts and anything else that would lower housing and transportation costs for residents.

The unified pro-development attitude contrasts sharply with ongoing battles in some North County cities against state housing mandates.

Intense heat wave coincides with Climate Week.

San Diego Climate Week, a collection of grassroots and sponsored events all related to the environment, saw several events canceled this week amid a sweltering heat wave that is breaking records for local fall temperatures.

“The irony wasn’t lost on any of us,” wrote Sam Hodgson, a spokesman for the volunteer-run week, in an email.

The heat wave isn’t the only environmental crisis bearing down on San Diego right now. The region is scrambling to prepare for a rare El Niño so intense that there isn’t yet a name for it, and untreated sewage continues to flow through the Tijuana River, poisoning air along the border and rendering the Pacific Ocean unfit for swimmers. Then there’s the simple everyday threats posed by floods and wildfires throughout the county.

Mayor Pushes for Councilmember’s Opponent

Multiple sources have confirmed for the Politics Report that San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has been pushing interest groups, including local unions, to reconsider their support of Councilmember Henry Foster if not outright drop him.

He has described Foster’s downfall to them as his No. 1 political priority.

It’s part of an ongoing surge of support for Foster’s opponent Martha Abraham. We’ve reported on the firefighters dropping Foster and throwing support to Abraham. This week, she announced the Chamber of Commerce was supporting her — and we’ve learned the Downtown Partnership also jumped aboard.
