UC San Diego launches new center for

anti-parasitic drug discovery, development

Neglected tropical diseases are a group of chronic and disabling parasitic infections that primarily affect poor and underserved communities. These diseases affect more than 1 billion people globally, yet are rarely the target of new drug discovery efforts. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), global climate change will most likely alter the communities at greatest risk for these diseases, as changes in temperature and rainfall influence the distribution and life cycles of the insects that transmit these parasites.

Leveraging its strengths in molecular biology, clinical research and pharmaceutical sciences, the University of California San Diego has now launched a new Center for Anti-Parasitic Drug Discovery and Development to address this unmet need in global health.

County budget proposal tops $6 billion

The region’s critical needs are at the center of a new increased budget that was formally presented to the county Board of Supervisors at a public hearing Wednesday.

The recommended budget for the upcoming year shows an increase of $469.5 million, or 8.1 percent, over the current year for a total of $6.26 billion.

The balanced budget plan focuses on helping the homeless and those with substance abuse and mental health issues. The new budget also emphasizes breaking barriers for people leaving the criminal justice system, addresses the affordable housing crisis, the quality of life in neighborhoods and protects natural resources. The budget retains or improves current levels of service to the county’s residents.

County Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer told the Board the county has an opportunity to change lives with this financial plan, and decisions made on this budget will have ripple effects across the region.

“I truly believe that this is an exciting budget as the additional expenditures are directed at meeting many of the needs of vulnerable or underserved residents, while also maintaining appropriate fiscal discipline,” said Helen Robbins-Meyer. “I think we have found a great balance this year.”
