Emergency Test Message Wednesday

Your mobile phone will emit a special tone and vibrate as it receives an emergency test message on Oct. 3.  It is part of a nationwide test by the Federal Emergency Management Agency of Wireless Emergency Alerts systems to assess its effectiveness.

You don’t need to take any action for the test. In a real situation, the system would be used to warn the public about dangerous weather, missing children, or another critical situation that may require you to evacuate or remain in place.

General Atomics receives

$441 million Army contract

GovCon Wire

General Atomics has received a potential five-year, $441.6 million contract to provide technical services to Gray Eagle unmanned aircraft systems the company has produced for the U.S. Army.

The service branch will determine funds and performance locations with each order under the cost-plus-fixed-fee contract that runs through Sept. 30, 2023, the Defense Department said.

The Army Contracting Command solicited bids for the procurement effort via the Internet and received one proposal.

A team of Army aviation personnel conducted a test and evaluation of the Gray Eagle UAS’ extended range variant earlier this month to obtain data about system performance.

National security think tank secures

$1 million in yearly funding from state

A leading think tank dedicated to researching global security threats, located on the campus of the University of California San Diego, has been awarded ongoing funding by the State of California. From finding ways to mitigate conflict through active dialogue on the Korean Peninsula, to exploring how to address the dangers of nuclear proliferation, such as training the next generation of nuclear policy experts, the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) works with all ten campus in the University of California (UC) system to address pressing and long-term international security concerns and policy challenges.

The multi-campus research unit recently reached an agreement with the State of California to secure an annual, ongoing $1 million in funds from the state general budget. The support will allow IGCC to launch a new initiative examining global catastrophic risk ranging from the possibility of financial meltdowns to nuclear calamities. The inaugural workshop looking at how threatened the world is by nuclear catastrophe will take place in Sacramento later this year.

Former Scripps researcher

James P. Allison wins Nobel Prize

Understanding how to shut off cancerous tumors’ ability to hide from immune attack has given doctors new tools to fight cancers such as melanoma. For his discovery of how to reawaken immune system attacks on cancer, former Scripps Research postdoctoral associate James P. Allison was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Monday, alongside Japanese immunologist Tasuku Honjo, M.D.

“Advancing the concept of immunotherapies for cancer has been an undertaking,” says Michael Oldstone, professor at Scripps Research. “Allison deserves a lot of credit for bringing that therapy from the bench into humans.”

Allison trained as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of noted Scripps Research immunologist Ralph Reisfeld from 1974 to 1977. In addition to his legacy in advancing cancer therapeutics, Scripps Research scientists know him as a determined scientist and skilled mentor.

World renowned educational

‘futurist’ to speak in San Diego

Internationally renowned educational futurist Yong Zhao will be in San Diego on Oct. 9 to address educators and parents about how they can help prepare students for a Year 2050 Education, where they are tech-savvy, career-ready leaders ready to solve the complex issues of the world they inherited.

Zhao will speak at the Downtown Public Library as a guest of e3 Civic High, a charter school the educator says is doing things right. “I chose to visit e3 Civic High because the school exemplifies the future of education,” said

Zhao. “Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to education, e3 Civic High identifies the strengths and interests of individual student and helps them connect with design thinking opportunities, industry internships, and state-of-the-art technology. Scholars can take AP classes, but they also have far more experiential learning than the dated, traditional model of education.”

Tickets are priced at $25 but e3 Civic says cost should never be a barrier to access, so if parents would like to attend the event, they are welcome to a complimentary ticket by contacting Maria Gibson at (619) 546-0000 or mgibson@e3civichigh.com.

Guy C. Clum Fund’s $1.5 million

gift is an investment in young minds

A motivated child is a happy child.
A motivated child is a happy child.

San Diego’s 21 Educational Enrichment Systems’ early education centers will be able to expand capacity, thanks to a recent gift of $1.5 million from The Guy C. Clum Fund at The San Diego Foundation. The education centers offer programs for children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years. The grant also will enable the EES to increase community engagement activities and advocacy on behalf of young children.

“There should never be a time when a three-year-old is on a wait list for preschool,” said Robin Layton, who has served as the president and CEO of EES for more than 30 years. “I just visited a classroom last week and as much satisfaction as it gave me to see young children flourishing in this stimulating environment, it was also heartbreaking to think about the children who aren’t getting the opportunity to lay a solid foundation for academic success. Thankfully, that will change now.”

Research has consistently shown that young children who attend preschool are better prepared for kindergarten and primary school education. And a student  who isn’t reading at grade level by third grade is four times as likely to leave high school without a diploma, according a longitudinal study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Authors of a report on the effects of pre-kindergarten effects say that while all children benefit from preschool, poor and disadvantaged young people often make the most gains.
