Airport Authority celebrates groundbreaking

for new Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport

San Diego County Regional Airport Authority and federal, state, and city officials held a groundbreaking celebration Monday for the new Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport. The project includes the replacement of the outdated Terminal 1, improvements to the airfield, improved transportation connectivity to the airport, and a new facility for the Airport Authority administration. Construction began Nov. 1.

The work is divided into three components, Terminals & Roadways, Airside Improvements, and a new Administration Building. The Administration Building component will be the first building to be completed within the New T1 program with an anticipated opening date in late 2023. It will be delivered by Sundt Construction Inc. with HOK as the lead architect.

The Terminal & Roadways component will be completed in phases and is a design-build project by Turner-Flatiron, a joint venture with Gensler as lead architect. The first phase will include 19 gates, an elevated departures roadway, outdoor check-in pavilions, a dedicated, on-airport arrivals roadway, and a five-story parking plaza. The earliest opening for the first phase is in mid-2025. The second phase will add 11 gates for a total of 30 gates. The earliest opening for the second phase is in late 2027.

North County leaders launch initiative to
strengthen regional workforce pipeline

The San Diego North Economic Development Council (SDNEDC) announced the launch of the Student Opportunities for Career Awareness and Learning(SOCAL) initiative, a long-term workforce development effort designed to provide students and career explorers with direct access to information and first-hand experiences regarding potential occupations and career opportunities in North County.

The direct access and transparency fostered through this initiative are intended to help cultivate the workforce for middle-wage jobs that require less than a four-year college degree.

The coalition supporting SOCAL represent many of the region’s premier business and educational institutions, including Tri-City Medical Center, the Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista Chambers of Commerce; MiraCosta College, Palomar College and others.

A $128,000 Neighborhood Reinvestment Grant from the County of San Diego was instrumental to the development and launch of SOCAL.

Navy creates fire safety group to prevent
blazes like one that gutted USS Bonhomme Richard

Times of San Diego

The U.S. Navy has formed a fire safety group to prevent catastrophes like the local blaze that destroyed the USS Bonhomme Richard last year.

Naval Sea Systems Command announced the establishment of the Industrial Fire Safety Assurance Group this month. The team has “a clear focus on preventing future industrial shipboard fires and reducing risks highlighted in the investigations of previous fires.”

According to NAVSEA, over the last 12 years, the Navy has seen 14 major shipboard fires that resulted in the loss of two capital asset ships, while costing the service $6 billion in repair and replacement costs.

One of those losses, of the Bonhomme Richard, occurred at Naval Base San Diego, where a suspected arson fire gutted the amphibious assault ship in July 2020.

On Monday, the sailor accused of setting the fire, Ryan Mays, faces an article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a preliminary hearing.

Tesla and Department of Motor
Vehicles in legislative hot seat

CalMatters

Tesla may drive state lawmakers to strip the California Department of Motor Vehicles of its authority to regulate self-driving cars — and return that power to themselves, the Los Angeles Times reports.

State Sen. Lena Gonzalez, a Long Beach Democrat and leader of the Senate Transportation Committee, asked DMV Director Steve Gordon in a letter last week for information about Tesla’s driverless car test program, citing videos “where it appears that serious driving errors were made and collisions were avoided only because of swift action by the driver.”

Unlike other companies, Tesla doesn’t follow test-reporting requirements — meaning the DMV may have little to no data about its program’s safety — and allows its own customers, not just trained test drivers, to use the autonomous technology on public roads.

Art of Dr. Seuss
The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection presented
at Exclusive Collections Gallery in Solana Beach

A selection of artworks from the Art of Dr. Seuss Collection is now available for viewing by the public at the Exclusive Collections Gallery at 2122 S. Cedros Ave. in Solana Beach through Dec. 31.

Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books, as well as The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, a collection based on decades of artwork which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure.

Theodor Seuss Geisel’s cat was never far from his artist thoughts. He drew himself a The Cat Behind ther Hat. His cat was the protagonist in several of his Secret Art paintings. And many of his early advertisements and cartoons had a “cat bystander” witnessing all the action.

Despite the unprecedented demand during his lifetime, no limited edition artworks were ever conceived, authorized, or created until this historic project began in 1997, six years after Geisel’s death.

Each of the estate-authorized limited edition has been adapted and reproduced from Geisel’s original drawings, paintings or sculpture. Each work bears a posthumously printed engraved Dr. Seuss signature.
