Northrop Grumman begins full-rate production
of Link-16 for the Marine Corps

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a $65 million contract by the U.S. Navy to execute the full rate production of Link-16 for the U.S. Marine Corps AH-1Z and UH-1Y aircraft, which will involve the integration of data link hardware across the fleet.

Link-16 is a secure data link that allows H-1 crews to share data and communications with other aircraft and users on military networks. This capability is a critical mission enabler as the Department of Defense moves to Joint All-Domain Command and Control.

Northrop Grumman’s mission systems solution for the H-1 fleet is trusted and combat-proven, with more than 450,000 total flight hours. The innovative processes, capabilities and open architecture developed for the H-1 fleet are directly applicable to other platforms and could be utilized in future aircraft development programs such as NAVAIR Vertical Take Off and Landing Family of Systems (VTOL FoS), MUX, and others.

Home sales edged up in February,
and prices continue to rise

Sales of previously owned homes improved somewhat in February from a particularly slow January, according to housing statistics compiled through the San Diego Multiple Listing Service by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.

Single-family (detached) home sales rose more than 3 percent last month, while attached properties (condominiums and townhomes) experienced a healthy 10-and-a-half percent increase in sales in February. Sales were down, however, compared to the same month last year: Detached home sales were 11 percent lower, and attached home sales were down more than 14 percent.

The median price of resale homes were up again, not surprisingly. Single-family home prices surpassed the $900,000 mark for the first time, an increase of almost 4 percent month-over-month. The closing price of condos and townhomes was up nearly 6 percent, landing at $625,000. Overall, home prices are up about 18 percent from a year ago. In February, homes were closing escrow in an average of three weeks.

Scientists at the Scripps Research Translational Institute developed the MyGeneRank mobile app that can provide study participants with their unique genetic risk score for coronary artery disease.
Scripps Research develops smartphone app
to calculate genetic risk for heart attack

A Scripps Research team developed a smartphone app that can calculate users’ genetic risk for coronary artery disease (CAD)—and found that users at high risk sought out appropriate medication after using the app.

In the study, which appears in npg Digital Medicine, the researchers detailed how their app

called MyGeneRank inputs participating individuals’ genetic information from the 23andMe genetic testing company and outputs a CAD risk score based on the DNA data. Of the 721 participants who provided complete information, those with high-risk scores were much more likely to start using statins or other cholesterol-lowering therapies, compared to those with low-risk scores.

“We saw about twice the rate of statin initiation in the high genetic risk group vs the low genetic risk group, which indicates that strategies like this could make a big contribution to public health—heart disease being the largest cause of death globally,” says study senior author Ali Torkamani, professor and director of Genomics and Genome Informatics at the Scripps Research Translational Institute.

Melax Tech receives NIH award to construct
AI-assisted application using COVID-19 data sets

Melax Tech, along with the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego, announces the securing of a Phase I contract focused on the development and enhancement of innovative user-focused informatic tools for use in basic and clinical research on infectious, immune and allergic diseases.

The Phase 1 contract, valued at $300,000, has been awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a COVID-19 Dataset Knowledge Graph to facilitate integrated analysis of heterogeneous COVID-19 data sets. The work is being done in partnership with the San Diego Supercomputer Center, where researchers contribute experience gained in developing Knowledge Graphs by participating in the NSF Open Knowledge Network initiative, as well as other COVID-19 related projects.

Despite existing efforts making COVID-19 data sets available for research uses, the volume and the heterogeneity of COVID-19 data make it difficult for researchers to find, understand and reuse relevant data sets for their research purposes.

New technology enables unprecedented
glimpse inside single brain cells

Salk Institute researchers have developed a new genomic technology to simultaneously analyze the DNA, RNA and chromatin—a combination of DNA and protein—from a single cell. The method, which took five years to develop, is an important step forward for large collaborations where multiple teams are working simultaneously to classify thousands of new cell types. The new technology, published in Cell Genomics on March 9, 2022, will help streamline analyses.

“This multimodal platform is going to be useful by providing a comprehensive database that can be used by the groups trying to integrate their single-modality data,” says Joseph Ecker,

director of the Genomic Analysis Laboratory, the Salk International Council Chair in Genetics and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. “This new information can also inform and guide future cell-type classification.”
