Study: San Diego Community College District
has a $4.5 billion economic impact on county

A recent study found that the San Diego Community College District has a $4.5 billion economic impact on San Diego County, with massive advantages to students, taxpayers and society from the education students receive at the district’s four colleges. The study was by Lightcast, a leading provider of economic and labor market data, and was based on data from the 2021-2022 academic year.

The district’s $4.5 billion economic impact supports 42,121 jobs, or one of out of every 53 jobs in San Diego County, the report said. The district’s economic impact is reflected in the jobs that graduates attain in high-demand industries because of their education, the cost of running the institutions, and the costs of construction at the college campuses. Taylor Guitars CEO Andy Powers has launched his own electric guitar brand, Powers Electric, as he wanted to create a guitar with “a sound and feel that didn’t already exist.”

Powers was known for making archtop electrics as an independent luthier before he joined Taylor, but the A-Type is a very different feeling beast entirely –  “Inspired by the lines of classic cars, hot rods, and surfboard design” according to Powers, it’s a fully enclosed hollowbody guitar with some interesting new innovations beyond its unique body shape.

EDC designates region’s top computing, engineering programs

Port of San Diego Oks 40-year lease by Topgolf

The Port of San Diego is set to enter a 40-year lease with Topgolf International on a 9.5-acre site on East Harbor Island. The flagship driving-range venue is planning to build a 70,700-square-foot, three-level facility featuring multiple restaurant and bar areas, as well as event and retail spaces estimated to bring in more than half a million guests to the waterfront annually.

JFS names Shreya Sasaki new VP of programs and services

Jewish Family Services of San Diego has promoted Shreya Sasaki to vice president of programs and services, a newly created position. Sasaki was formerly JFS senior director of family and community services, a post that went to Gina Mittal as a promotion. Prior to joining JFS, Sasaki served as chief operating officer at Mission Driven Finance, a startup impact investing firm focused on advancing economic opportunity. She has also held key roles with Kaiser Permanente, working as director of finance for health and hospital operations from 2016 to 2017,

MG Properties acquires Bear Valley Park Apartments in Denver

MG Properties, a leading real estate investment and management company, has completed the acquisition of Bear Valley Park Apartments, a premier garden-style community located in Denver, Colo. for a total purchase price of $76 million. The closing marks MGP’s third multifamily acquisition of 2023 in the Denver area. The seller was Jackson Square Properties.

Cal State San Marcos partners with Study Group

Cal State San Marcos has appointed Study Group as an international education partner to increase enrollments of overseas students. The move marks Study Group’s first direcrt entry partnership in California and will see the global education specialists further enrich the university’s diverse campus community. Study Group will be recruiting talented international students directly into undergraduate and graduate programs.

Sempra named among Newsweek’s ‘Most Responsible Companies’

Sempra has been recognized by Newsweek as one of “America’s Most Responsible Companies” for 2024, earning the distinction for the fifth consecutive year. The annual list ranks companies based on their commitment to corporate responsibility, specifically on efforts related to environment, social and corporate governance. Sempra has been included since the list’s inception. This year, Sempra received high marks for its performance in social criteria.

As an insurance professional with over three decades of claims and sales experience, Roza  brings his regional expertise to the company’s Central California team. Roza’s leadership will focus on deepening broker relationships, assisting producers in achieving their sales targets and profitably growing sales.
