UCSD scientists find ‘complicated soup’ of toxic chemicals in South Bay air
By Philip Salata | inewsource
South Bay residents have been breathing chemicals emanating from the Tijuana River including one that has been known to damage DNA, another that is used in tire manufacturing and traces of methamphetamine, according to a new study.
The research comes from a team of scientists from UC San Diego and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography that says it’s the first study of its kind to track a wide range of chemical pollutants being transmitted from polluted water into the air.
Researchers say that when rainfall causes sewage overflows, southern San Diego air can carry toxic chemicals from the Tijuana River at levels similar to those faced by workers at a wastewater treatment plant. But while wastewater workers may be exposed for a limited amount of hours and with protective gear, residents have likely been exposed to the chemicals for decades.
Spending Cuts Key to Reducing California’s Persistent Budget Gaps, Analyst Says
By Jane Yang| The Epoch Times
California is likely to face persistent future budget deficits, according to the state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), which flagged concerns to state leaders in recent reports.
The independent government agency recommended that the state Legislature at least adopt the governor’s proposed solutions in addressing long-term structural deficits.
The LAO said that using independent analysis models, it reached conclusions similar to those of the California Department of Finance: Both projected the state’s operating deficits to range from $10 billion to $20 billion over this fiscal year and the next two.
In California, the Tail is Wagging the Dog on Biological Men in Women’s Sports
By Katy Grimes | California Globe
Tuesday President Donald Trump announced that California’s current policy of allowing biological males to compete in girls sports against girls, will result in significant cuts in federal funding if California continues to resist the President’s executive order banning biological men from participating in girls school sports.
A little later in the day, the California Interscholastic Federation, which governs high school sports in California, and has said it follows state law allowing athletes to play on a sports team “consistent with their gender identity,” altered their gender policy, clearly interested in covering their butts. The CIF created a “pilot entry process” to allow previously eliminated female athletes to now participate in the 2025 CIF State Championships.
What a big bold move for the CIF, which is still not honoring or protecting California’s high school female athletes from biological males, or their opportunities in competition, by allowing the trans athletes to still compete against women and girls.
