California’s War on Eggs & Bacon Invites Federal Lawsuit
By Katy Grimes | California Globe
From the first state in the nation to offer prison inmates an all-vegan menu, California voters passed a ballot measure in 2018 mandating more living space for veal calves, cows and pigs, and banned the confinement of egg-laying hens in cages.
Proposition 12, the Farm Animal Confinement Initiative, also set up a ban on the sale of these agricultural products in California that don’t meet the new requirements, attempting to influence how farmers in other states raise their animals.
That’s so California.
First California legislators came for our cigarettes, and banned smoking indoors and in public parks. Then they banned plastic bags, foie gras and shark fin soup. Next they banned styrofoam, plastic straws, plastic packaging, petroleum products, and natural gas fracking. Chicken farmers are banned from caging egg-laying chickens, and the sale of pork and veal in California from farm animals raised in cages is also banned.
Trump Froze $50 Million in Education Funds. Here’s How Hard Each Local District Was Hit
By Jakob McWhinney | Voice of San Diego
$50,400,472.
That’s how much federal funding the Trump administration has frozen for schools in San Diego County. Those funds are part of $6.2 billion in grants frozen by the administration late last month, one day before they were supposed to be distributed.
That last second move has left schools across the country reeling. The frozen grants funded everything from services for English language learners to professional development for teachers to before- and after-school care.
What comes next is anyone’s guess. Is the freeze temporary? Will Trump administration officials attempt to make them permanent?
Why San Diego Police Are Sometimes on Scene During ICE Raids
By Jake Gota| KPBS
San Diego police have been on the scene at multiple immigration enforcement operations in San Diego, raising questions about what role officers play in these federal raids.
Police were called to assist with crowds after the raid on Buona Forchetta in South Park in May. And earlier this month in Linda Vista, SDPD officers were on the scene while an apartment complex was raided by federal agents.
@officialarturo on TikTok recorded a video of the raid and asked a San Diego police officer about the department’s role in the operation.
