North County Report: An Unexpected Push for Federal Immigration Reform

Two North County cities with Republican-majority City Councils are calling for federal immigration reform, though the two took slightly different approaches.

As arrests by immigration officials continue to ramp up throughout the region, city leaders in Escondido and Encinitas recently decided to take a stand against the enforcement.

Encinitas leaders approved a slew of actions after a passionate Council discussion, including launching a “Know Your Rights” campaign, exploring the banning of face masks worn by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and potentially joining lawsuits with other cities challenging ICE operations.

The stakes for a redistricting war differ between Newsom and Californians

Last week, as Gov. Gavin Newsom was signing legislation aimed at giving his Democratic Party five more congressional seats, contending that it would protect democracy, postal workers throughout the state were delivering a four-page flier denouncing the gerrymander as a threat to democracy.

Newsom declared that Democrats should “play hardball” in response to President Donald Trump’s drive for Texas and other red states to conduct their own gerrymanders to shore up the slender majority for Republicans in the House of Representatives.

“We tried to hold hands and talk about the way the world should be,” Newsom said. “We can’t just think differently, we have to act differently.”

One often wonders while strolling atop the bluffs at Sunset Cliffs: Will today be the day the path crumbles into the sea?

Determined to enjoy the view, families and elderly couples navigate a dwindling, dusty trail along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Exercisers dart into the road or hurdle barriers where erosion has already consumed any remaining clifftop.

Knowing the ocean will eventually rise and more of the cliffs will fall, the city of San Diego plans to epically change how people use this peninsula’s crown jewel.
