California Lawmakers Pass Bill Giving Slave Descendants an Edge in University Admissions

California lawmakers sent a bill to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk on Sept. 12 that would allow colleges and universities to give preferential treatment in admissions to students who are descendants of slaves.

Assemblyman Isaac Bryan, a Democrat from Culver City, authored AB 7 to give California’s institutions of higher education a way to address “educational inequities tied directly to slavery and its lasting effect.”

“By allowing institutions to consider an applicant’s lineage as a factor in admissions decisions, the bill aims to increase institutional access for students who research has shown still experience the greatest educational attainment and achievement disadvantages,” Bryan said in a statement to the Legislature.

San Diegans invited to give input on future Del Mar Fairgrounds master site plan

Since 1936, San Diegans have taken trips to the Del Mar Fairgrounds to attend and participate in events and activities in times of celebration and in times of need.

But this fall, the Fairgrounds will flip the script by visiting communities across San Diego County.

The 22nd District Agricultural Association, the self-funding organization that owns and operates the Fairgrounds and produces the annual San Diego County Fair, will soon host a series of six “Fairgrounds 2050 Open House” sessions to gather public input about a future master site plan.

Inflation, labor costs hurting restaurant business in Pacific, Mission beaches

everything is proving to be a tall order for beachfront merchants in Pacific and Mission beaches.

There are numerous vacancies, for example, on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach. Some prominent businesses that have shuttered recently include Union Kitchen & Tap, Crushed, Cabo Cantina and World Curry.

While Sunny Lee, executive director of the community’s business improvement district, Discover PB, said, “There has also been a growing number of businesses moving into vacant storefronts,” many of the ones that remain open are facing challenges.
