Sacramento Report: What’s Caltrans Got to Do with It, Anyway?

I’ve touched on the housing crisis from two different angles in recent weeks: supply, from the vantage point of the Pacific coast, and the distribution of homelessness services to cities.
This week, I wanted to take a closer look at how, despite homelessness being a hallmark priority of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration, efforts in the Legislature to make it easier for cities to tackle it were sidelined this year and could be in the next year, thanks to a tight budget.
County Coalition Pressing Ahead on Sales-Tax Pitch

A coalition of labor and advocacy groups announced Friday they will try to get a proposed countywide half-cent sales tax increase on the November 2026 ballot.
If approved, the measure would raise a projected $360 million annually for yet-to-be-specified causes including public safety, health care, solutions to the Tijuana sewage crisis and child care.
The citizens group behind the hoped-for ballot measure includes the county’s largest labor union Service Employees International Union Local 221, advocacy group Children First San Diego, Cal Fire Local 2881 County Firefighters and the San Diego Foundation.

The San Diego County Fair is kicking off the holiday season with an early gift for Fair fans: a Buy-One, Get-One-FREE Season Pass, available for a limited time — from “Black Friday,” November 28 through “Cyber Monday,” December 1.
A Fair Season Pass, regularly priced at $65, gives guests unlimited admission throughout the 2026 Fair’s 20-day run, June 10–July 5 (closed Mondays and Tuesdays) at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. And with the BOGO offer, two guests can experience the magic of the Fair all season long for the price of one.
The 2026 Fair theme, “Once Upon a Fair,” celebrates the joys of reading and storytelling, inviting guests to step into a world where every day at the Fair is a new adventure.
