McAlister Institute’s 9th Annual Miracles of Recovery Luncheon Highlights Hope as San Diego Continues to Battle Addiction Crisis

By The McAlister Institute

At a time when communities across San Diego County continue to confront the ongoing impact of addiction and mental health challenges, McAlister Institute will bring together community leaders, advocates, and individuals in recovery for an inspiring afternoon focused on hope, healing, and second chances. The organization will host its 9th Annual Miracles of Recovery Luncheon on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Coasterra Restaurant.

This year’s Miracles of Recovery Award will honor Oscar Medina Sr., Chief Executive Officer of Serene Health, a community and corporate leader whose work is helping expand access to behavioral health care and recovery services across the region. Through leadership at Serene Health and a strong commitment to collaboration among nonprofits, healthcare providers, and community organizations, his efforts have helped bring new partnerships, resources, and opportunities to individuals facing substance use disorders and barriers to care. His leadership reflects the spirit of the award — innovation, investment, and compassionate action to improve the lives of individuals and families impacted by addiction and health disparities.

The event comes as substance use and overdose continue to impact thousands of families across the region. In San Diego County alone, 945 people died from drug overdoses in 2024, underscoring the continued need for prevention, treatment, and recovery services throughout the community.
