Border Report: The Dead Birds of Friendship Park
by Kate Morissey| Voice of San Diego
Maria Fernández was hiking out toward Friendship Park, a strip of land between San Diego and Tijuana near where the border line runs into the ocean that was supposed to be a binational garden, when she began to smell death.
She was used to smelling sewage in the contaminated water that floods the path through Border Field State Park when it rains, but this smell was different.
As she reached the border wall and made her way down to the beach on that Sunday morning in early April, she saw a dozen or so dead birds scattered across the sand.
“I felt so sorry for them,” Fernández said in Spanish.
Gov. Newsom Trumpets ‘California Derangement Syndrome’ Instead of Doing His Job
By Katy Grimes | California Globe
The Southern California “Sandy” fire currently burning in Simi Valley, has torched 1,700 acres in 24 hours – something California Governor Gavin Newsom should be focused on like a laser beam, after last year’s Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Altadena fires, and epic failure to rebuild. Instead, doing everything but his job, Gov. Newsom was in Washington DC today at the Center for American Progress IDEAs conference talking trash on President Donald Trump and his administration, and whining about “a growing condition known as California Derangement Syndrome (CDS). Newsom claims this is “a disorder marked by chronic misinformation, selective outrage, and a refusal to acknowledge measurable progress in the Golden State.”
We first heard of this newly discovered psychological phenomenon at Newsom’s May Budget Revise last week.
Gov. Newsom claims in a press statement that “Many in the right wing are falling ill after consuming repeated misinformation from right-wing outlets like Fox News, the New York Post, Breitbart, and Newsmax — which insist California is a dystopian crime-ridden communist wasteland. Treatment is available and requires no insurance: facts, data, and a brief consultation with the information below.”
San Diego County Credit Union Honors San Diego County’s Best Teachers
By San Diego County Credit Union
San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of Southern California’s largest locally-owned financial institutions, is proud to celebrate San Diego’s finest educators through its newly rebranded Excellence in Education program, formerly known as Salute to Teachers. In partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education and with support from ABC 10News, the program celebrates the remarkable contributions of local teachers and shares their inspiring stories with the community.
“We are honored to recognize and support the incredible educators who make a lasting impact on students and families across San Diego County,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO. “Through Excellence in Education, we are proud to shine a light on these dedicated teachers.”
Earlier this month, SDCCU hosted its Excellence in Education event on May 1, recognizing all 50 outstanding nominees for their dedication and impact in the classroom. Last week, the five 2026-2027 Teachers of the Year were surprised in their classrooms, and ABC 10News will highlight the winners, acknowledging their inspiring work and the difference they make for students across San Diego County.
