As San Onofre dismantling continues, experts to discuss how to handle nuclear waste that remains

The reactors and most of the former San Onofre power plant are nearing the end of decommissioning, but millions of pounds of spent nuclear fuel pose a separate, much longer-term challenge.
Two congressmen will meet with nuclear scientists, clean-energy advocates and former federal regulators on Thursday at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Seaside Forum in La Jolla for an all-day discussion about long-term management of the waste.
City leaders urge residents to prep for flooding, evacuations due to El Niño

It’s here, and it’s big: 2026 is the year of the potentially record-breaking Super El Niño.
Nearly every city department was on hand at Balboa Park on Tuesday to explain the city’s preparations for heavier-than-normal storms and flooding — while urging residents to do their own readiness work, too.
“The city is doing everything we can to be prepared, and we’re asking for your partnership in doing the same,” Mayor Todd Gloria said. “You do your part. We do ours.”
SDCCU Partners with CBS 8 to Raise Funds for Rady Children’s Health Resident Canine Therapy Program

San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of Southern California’s largest locally-owned financial institutions, is proud to announce their support of the Rady Children’s Health Resident Canine Therapy Program, through their partnership with CBS 8 for an on-air Giveathon. The Giveathon will be held on Wednesday, August 26 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Team SDCCU on-site at the CBS studio answering phones from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All donations collected will go toward hiring specialized workers who live and work with specially trained dogs that go into hospitals and help pediatric patients receiving treatment.
