For many families in the 92113 ZIP code, scenes like this have been rare.
“We can never come to the park because it’s dangerous, especially when it starts getting dark,” says Lilia, who declined to give her last name. “And that’s a problem because those of us who live in apartments don’t have a yard where our kids can play.”
Politics Report: Midway’s Dog Days

This week, via the Sacramento Report and our Why It Matters segment on KPBS, we have tried to get the latest on SB 958, the legislation provoked by the Midway Rising project and the court ruling that threw out the ballot measure that lifted the height limit in Midway.
We thought it was a good idea to check in with the City Council candidates to see what they thought about SB 958.
First, what it does: Not much? It basically says that if a project meets certain conditions (read lots of money and housing) any impacts on the environment from just the height of the buildings can’t be considered significant impacts as that matters to the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA.
‘Quite startling’: Hate crimes spike since shooting at Islamic Center

Two months after a fatal shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, the community is still reeling.
The San Diego Anti-Hate Coalition says that over a two-month period since the attack, the region saw the largest increase in hate crimes documented by the San Diego City Attorney’s office in four years.
The hate-crime targets run the gamut from Muslims to members of the LGBTQ community.
