The federal purchase of two immigration detention centers, including the largest one in metro San Diego, is the latest move in a battle for jurisdiction over the centers in California — and one that could cost both taxpayers and migrants in ways not yet measured, experts say.
The purchases of the Otay Mesa and California City detention centers this month cost the Department of Homeland Security hundreds of millions of dollars more than what corporate filings show the facilities to be worth.
A DHS spokesperson said the deal was made specifically to thwart California politicians’ efforts to “outlaw or make private prisons financially infeasible.”

La Jolla Music Society (LJMS) kicks off celebrating the 40th anniversary of SummerFest, its renowned annual chamber music festival which brings the greatest classical musicians and more from around the world to The Conrad in La Jolla for four weeks of concerts planned by Music Director and acclaimed concert pianist Inon Barnatan.
SummerFest 2026 takes on the theme “Making History,” and runs from July 31 to August 29. Here are the events scheduled for July 31 through August 9.
SDCCU Raises $24,352 for Children’s Hospitals in Southern California during the Miracle Month of May

San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of Southern California’s largest locally-owned financial institutions, raised $24,352 to support the efforts of Rady Children’s Health in San Diego and Orange County this past May during its annual Miracle Month of May campaign. Funds generated from the campaign will be used in part to help provide essential medical care for children at the two children’s hospitals.
Donations were collected online and at SDCCU’s convenient branch locations in San Diego, Riverside, and Orange counties throughout May 2026. The combined efforts raised $21,558 in San Diego and $2,794 in Orange County, for a total of $24,352, far exceeding the $10,000 goal.
“We are proud to continue supporting Rady Children’s Health in San Diego and Orange County through the Miracle Month of May,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO. “The generosity of our members, employees, and the community continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families throughout Southern California.”
