San Marcos Is Crushing Its Housing Goals
by Tigyst Lane | Voice of San Diego
In 2004, a developer had an idea to create a downtown where one had never existed before — in the suburbs of San Marcos.
The area, adjacent to California State University San Marcos, now spans 200 acres of urban density with a walkable village charm. Thousands of homes, dozens of acres of parks and open spaces, restaurants, shops and offices have been springing up in the new downtown for the past several years.
On any given afternoon, students spill out of The Quad, professionals work from open-air co-working spaces and locals gather for the weekly farmers market.
UCSD granted almost $16M for long-term study of aging, dementia in Latinos
by Jennifer Vigil | Times of San Diego
UC San Diego and UC Davis have received a $15.85 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund an in-depth study on how the brain ages, officials said Wednesday.
The work will focus on aging in Hispanic and Latino communities because they remain underrepresented in research on dementia and other conditions.
Latinos have a higher risk of heart and vascular diseases and are more prone to developing mild cognitive impairment or dementia than people from other groups. The grant is intended to support the creation of the most comprehensive long-term dataset on Hispanic and Latino brain aging to date.

By the San Diego County Fair
Hiring season is officially underway for Fair season.
Over the next two months, the 22nd District Agricultural Association will hire more than 1,200 temporary workers to help produce the 2026 San Diego County Fair. Openings include roles in customer service, ticketing, facilities, exhibits, cart and tram drivers, entertainment production, safety staff, parking and traffic, and more. And every job is an opportunity to take part in the largest, longest-running, and most fun community event in San Diego County.
Individuals of all experience levels, ages 14 and older, are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants can browse all open positions on the San Diego County Fair’s website at sdfair.com/jobs and apply online through a quick, easy process. Positions are open until filled, and almost all workers will be hired by May 31.
The 2026 San Diego County Fair runs June 10 through July 5 (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Many positions begin prior to Opening Day, and schedules vary by position. This year’s theme, “Once Upon a Fair,” invites guests — and employees — to step into a storybook adventure filled with imagination, creativity, and community spirit.
“The San Diego County Fair is a reflection of our community — and so is our dynamic, diverse, and service-oriented summer team,” said Carlene Moore, CEO of the 22nd DAA. “Whether you have worked with us before or you are looking for a new way to make some extra money at a great gig, working at the Fair will be a fun and memorable way to spend your summer.”
The 22nd DAA is an equal opportunity employer.
