Without Issa to run against, leading Dems in CA-48 race find themselves in a new race

Democrats running in California’s 48th District Congressional race jumped into the field with the aim of unseating high-profile Republican incumbent Rep. Darrell Issa.

At the last minute, he dropped out of the race last month and left a wide-open field that suddenly needed to recalibrate its strategy. They’re no longer running against one of the wealthiest members of Congress — but they’re also no longer running against a well-known figure closely tied to President Donald Trump.

Now, the Democrats are competing in the June primary for one presumed spot to face the lone Republican in the race, County Supervisor Jim Desmond, the former mayor of San Marcos.

UPolitics Report: Could the City Lose Liberty Station?

Imagine the city of San Diego selling the sprawling campus of Liberty Station for $2.7 million.

What do the buyers think this is? A four-bedroom house in Point Loma?

As astonishing as that number sounds, that is the actual offer on the table.

And it’s not just an offer on the table. The company that wants to buy most of Liberty Station, called Seligman Properties, is doing everything it can to force the sale — in court and by other means.

Gaslamp wants a no-vending zone enforced. The city is being sued over its enforcement.

Michael Trimble is no stranger to publicly calling out the city.

The Gaslamp Quarter Association executive director has clashed with the mayor over terminating the Fifth Avenue Promenade contract, increasing the cost of valet parking permits and new surge street parking prices around Petco Park. Many complaints are related to the city’s efforts to raise revenue amid a budget shortfall, often by nickel and diming the tourism industry.

Trimble has a new target, announced Friday, after a series of cryptic social media posts this week stating that the historic heart of San Diego “deserves better.” He is calling on the city to immediately, and consistently enforce a no-vending zone in the Gaslamp.
