$19M gift to The Center sparks deep rift with gay seniors

But it also sparked a rift between the nonprofit and some gay seniors over transparency, the dissolution of a senior advisory committee and The Center’s financial management.

The breach is still widening four years later, as entrenched sides double down on what counts as ethical sharing of information about the deceased and how the money should be spent while still respecting their wishes.

A board meeting divided

Seniors impassioned by the issue, organized by Ted Callam, Elaine Lewis and Charles Kaminski, attended The Center’s board meeting on Tuesday, April 28.

Five questions with Steve Poltz: He’s back in San Diego, with a Lifetime Achievement Award coming his way

If you’ve noticed a recent uptick in local appearances by quintessential San Diego singer-songwriter Steve Poltz, who relocated to Nashville in 2016, it’s not because he’s been visiting a lot more often.

Poltz and his wife, Sharon, recently moved back to town — just in time for Steve to receive the Country Dick Montana Lifetime Achievement Award at the 35th Annual San Diego Music Awards.

It’s not the first time Poltz has received a big SDMA honor. In 2000, the awards named him San Diego’s Most Influential Artist of the 1990s. From co-writing Jewel’s 1996 pop smash “You Were Meant For Me,” to national touring and recording with offbeat music-and-comedy group the Rugburns, to more than a dozen albums under his own name, Poltz has been one of the most accomplished San Diego musicians of his generation.

Fashion Week San Diego kicks off season with Spring Showcase in La Jolla

Fashion Week San Diego kicked off the 2026 season on April 24 in La Jolla with the Spring Showcase.

The event, now in its 19th year, remains the largest and longest fashion week on the West Coast. The kickoff took place at The Living Room Coffeehouse, a cozy café and lounge known for its artistic vibe.

“Our 19th year is focused on igniting our creative community,” said Gwen Bates, owner and executive director of FWSD.
