by Kate Morrissey | Voice of San Diego
Diego Armando Acosta goes to the beach with his father almost weekly to surf along the Baja California coast.
Though they live in Tijuana, the father and son said they often choose to head to beaches further south around Rosarito to look for cleaner water.
“It’s better,” the father, Diego Acosta, told me in Spanish. “You can see the difference.”
USPFC & San Diego Blood Bank Launch First Responder Blood Drive This May
By The San Diego Blood Bank
The United States Police & Fire Championships (USPFC) and the San Diego Blood Bank are partnering this May for a community-wide blood drive. Timed with National Police Week (May 10-16) and EMS Week (May 17-23), the initiative invites law enforcement, fire, and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel, as well as the broader community, to participate together in support of first responders and ahead of the upcoming USPFC Games in San Diego.
The USPFC was founded in 1967 in San Diego by Police Lieutenant Veon “Duke” Nyhus to promote fitness, camaraderie, and wellness among public safety professionals through sport and competition. That same spirit now extends into this campaign, where donors can visit any San Diego Blood Bank location from May 10–23, 2026, and mention “USPFC,” “the games,” and what first responder agency they represent (i.e. Chula Vista Fire Department, San Diego County Sheriff etc.) Blood donations will be tracked by first responder agency with results shared on a public leaderboard that fuels a friendly competition between departments. All the while, community members are also encouraged to donate and support the agency of their choice.
All donors throughout May will receive Padres Summer Blood Drive T-shirts, and first responders will additionally receive exclusive agency-specific reversible woven tag keychains. The campaign offers San Diegans a chance to support those who serve while helping ensure a stable, lifesaving blood supply for local hospitals.

San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of Southern California’s largest locally-owned financial institutions, collected and donated 4,639 pounds of dog and cat food to help support the efforts of Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) through the third annual Full Bowls campaign. Donations were collected at all San Diego County SDCCU branch locations during the month of March and were delivered to RCHS to feed animals in their care and help stock the shelves of the organization’s food pantry.
“We are grateful for the continued success of our Full Bowls campaign,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO. “We’re humbled by the generosity of everyone who contributed and are proud to support the important work Rancho Coastal Humane Society does to care for animals in need throughout our community.”
According to RCHS, more than $30,000 is spent annually to feed their shelter pets. The food donations will allow RCHS to reallocate these funds normally spent on food to veterinary care, staff education, promotion of adoptable animals and other necessary costs.
