Morning Report: San Diego’s Homeless Day Center Faces Uncertain Future

By Voice of San Diego

One lesser-discussed victim of the budget cuts is the Neil Good Day Center, a resource hub that will shutter later this year after serving homeless San Diegans for 35 years.

But that’s not the end of the story: Social Media Producer Bella Ross reports that Father Joe’s Villages, the center’s operator, has vowed to retrofit part of a cafeteria in its Imperial Avenue campus into a new day center.

It will be about a third of the size of the current center and its service capacity will take at least a 25 percent hit. It also won’t receive any city funding. But they say it’s better than nothing.

Cal State faculty push to prevent AI tools from replacing them as schools and staff experiment

By Mikhail Zinshteyn | CalMatters

The nation’s largest public four-year university may soon be barred from replacing faculty with generative AI as a bill backed by a union of professors comes nearer to reaching the governor’s desk.

Few examples exist of the California State University’s attempting to replace faculty labor with generative AI tools, but the faculty union wants to prevent such efforts from ever getting off the ground. The bill so far has garnered no opposition from lawmakers and may clear the Legislature as soon as Monday.

“We do have some cases of the potential replacement of faculty work by AI, and so I personally am very concerned about closing the barn door after the horse has already gotten out,” said Kevin Wehr, a professor of sociology at Sacramento State, which is part of the Cal State system. Wehr leads the bargaining team for the faculty union, the California Faculty Association.

SDCCU Stuff the Bus is Collecting Monetary Donations for Back-to-School Supplies for the More Than 24,000 Students Experiencing Homelessness in San Diego County

by San Diego County Credit Union

San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institutions, is once again collecting monetary donations to purchase back-to-school supplies for students experiencing homelessness — to help set these students up for success in the coming school year. Having a backpack and necessary back-to-school supplies is essential for success in learning. The annual Stuff the Bus campaign, celebrating its twelfth year, was launched in partnership with SDCCU, the San Diego County Office of Education, and iHeartMedia radio stations in support of Live Well San Diego. A small donation can make a big difference in the life of a student in need – just $20 can provide a student with a backpack full of school supplies.

“We are proud to partner with the San Diego County Office of Education and iHeartMedia to equip students in need with new supplies for the upcoming school year,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO. “We are continually inspired by the generosity of our community and how San Diego Unites to support local students experiencing homelessness.”

More than 24,000 school-age children were identified as experiencing homelessness during the last school year. Homelessness for school-age children can mean living in a shelter, sharing a residence with multiple families, living in a car or trailer in San Diego County, or sharing a room in an apartment with relatives. Homelessness is not limited to urban, downtown San Diego — it also affects suburban school districts all over the county.
